Interview exposes the abuses committed on AEUP members, in particular those in the AEUP Woreda offices. Please disregard the mistake at the begining by VOA correspondant Ato Addisu in incorrectly naming Melaw Ethiopia Andenet Derejit as "Melaw Ethiopia Hizib Derejit" as well as the abreviation stating
መኢሕድ in place of
መኢአድ. You are encouraged to advise Ato Addisu and VOA to correct the mistake since VOA program is heard throughout Ethiopia and can be misleading considering the current & past confusion of "Kinijit Teletafies (

Ethiopia Washington Update
Mesfin Mekonen, Kinijit/AEUP International Foreign Relations- Feb 26, 2009
According to the UN close to six (6) million Ethiopians face starvation now. We cannot turn our attention away from this looming tragedy. The hydroelectric/irrigation project that we in AEUP have suggested for Blue Nile and Awash rivers could be quite helpful in alleviating this problem. We have drawn wide support for this proposal in the United States Congress.
On another development, recently President of the AEUP, Hailu Shawel was visited at his office in Addis Ababa by a US diplomat, the chief of the Political/Economic Section at the Embassy in Addis Ababa -- Michael Gonzales.

Ethiopia Report-2009
Human Rights Watch Situation in Ethiopia continued to deteriorate- By HRW Jan 13, 2008
The Ethiopian government's human rights record remains poor, marked by an ever-hardening intolerance towards meaningful political dissent or independent criticism. Ethiopian military forces have continued to commit war crimes and other serious abuses with impunity in the course of counterinsurgency campaigns in Ethiopia's eastern Somali Region and in neighboring Somalia.
Local-level elections in April 2008 provided a stark illustration of the extent to which the government has successfully crippled organized opposition of any kind-the ruling party and its affiliates won more than 99 percent of all constituencies, and the vast majority of seats were uncontested. In 2008 the government launched a direct assault on civil society by introducing legislation that would criminalize most independent human rights work and subject NGOs to pervasive interference and control.

Human rights situation in Ethiopia continued to deteriorate
Jan 16, 2009 Kongo Times, Ireland

The shutdown of the newspaper Andenet and its Web edition has not been reversed. Wzro Mesobework is on bail but still facing phony charges concocted by the regime. We in the AEUP continue to request of the International Community to intervene with the regime and demand immediate release of all political prisoners, ...
