Joining the hunger strike are CUD chairman Hailu Shawel, Birtukan Midgesa, the deputy chair, Dr. Berhanu Nega and Professor Mesfin Woldemariam. "We have decided to go on hunger strike indefinitely beginning Monday. We will take only liquids," he told journalists at Ethiopia's central investigation centre. 'There is no evidence against us,' Hailu Shawel, CUDP chair told journalists during a brief meeting at the Federal Police Crime Investigation Department where they spoke freely in the presence of the guards. Four of the detainees were present at the meeting. 'Ours is a political, not a criminal case, and the government is wasting the resources of this poor country,' Berhanu Nega, CUDP executive member and mayor-elect of Addis Ababa, said. Hailu and Berhanu castigated the international community for 'giving lip service' to democracy, but failing to act during gross human rights abuses during the post-election disturbances this year in which many people were reported killed and scores of others were injured. 'It is a mockery of human rights when such leading democratic countries as Germany and Britain greet the leader of a country only a few days after his government was involved in mass murder of demonstrators,' Mesfin Wolddedmariam, CUDP member and civil rights activist, said. He was referring to Meles' visit to Bonn for a meeting of the German-African Forum hosted by President Horst Koehler, and to Prime Minister Tony Blair for congratulating Meles on his election for a third five-year term. Among those taken into custody were leaders of the opposition Coalition for Unity and Democracy party. The party is challenging the parliamentary elections in May which Prime Minister Meles Zenawai's ruling Ethiopian People's Democracy Front, reportedly won. The opposition says that the results were fraudulent. Negotiations between the government and the opposition collapsed at the end of October. Also detained are eight journalists, including Andualem Ayle of the weekly newspaper Ethiop and Nardos Meaza of Satanaw, another weekly. The Committee to Protect Journalists, an independent monitoring group, says "The [Ethiopian] government began a crackdown on independent media and threatened to charge some journalists with treason, an offense that carries the death penalty." Vicki Huddleston is the acting U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia. She says the turmoil resulting from the disputed election is holding back progress: "In the internal affairs of a nation, there's no divorce. You've got to listen to all the voices. To resolve the quarrels of the family and the quarrels of the nation, the way ahead is clearly through dialogue, through building trust and confidence, through a peaceful means, to a strong, democratic nation." Listen VOA

Nov 18: News Headlines
Violations Committed Against Members and Supporters of the Opposition
VOA Interview with two Tigrai opposition leaders
Ethiopia says unrest under control despite rebels' allegations
Valuing America, NSU prof risks life in Ethiopia
Amnesty International Letter of concern to Meles
EU to suspend aid to Ethiopia
Ethiopia investigates reports of deaths in jailbreak

Summary Update: EU - Aid should be suspended until human rights offences stop "No more EU money for repression in Ethiopia" The European Parliament's political groups have agreed to send a letter to the Council asking for a suspension of EU development aid (excluding humanitarian funds) to Ethiopia in response to the country's ongoing failure to respect human rights. This measure is foreseen under article 96 of the Cotonou agreement, which is an essential element of EU cooperation with Ethiopia. Speaking at a joint press conference yesterday, Margrete Auken, Danish MEP for the Socialistisk Folkeparti and member of the EU's election observation mission to Ethiopia, said: "The May election mobilised more than 90% of the Ethiopian population who, in voting, demonstrated their faith in democracy. But the problems started just after information on the poor result of the ruling party at the polls began to emerge. This provoked a massive crackdown by the authorities in an attempt to turn the situation around and keep power at any cost. In November, the government arrested the entire leadership and the elected members of the main opposition CUD party. Peaceful demonstrators were shot in the street of Addis Ababa, and other major cities. The government security forces are conducting house-to-house searches and arresting thousands of people suspected of sympathising with the opposition. Journalists from the independent press, leaders of civil society organisations and human rights activists are also being arrested. In addition, hundreds have gone in hiding." "The scale of the repression is beyond imagination. I heard poignant stories of atrocities; a wife of an elected member of the Addis Ababa city administration who was shot dead for crying when her husband was brutally arrested is just only one example among many. Yesterday, you couldn't miss it; there was a rally by some upwards of nearly 20,000 Ethiopians here in Washington between the Congress, the World Bank, here at the State Department, at the White House. And they're talking again about jailed opposition leaders, which also may include journalists, and there's a total media blackout from Addis Ababa that's controlled by the government. What are the procedures? They are demanding new elections and an end to this 14-year dictatorship. Do you agree with them and what's the next step?
MR. ERELI: The United States has made clear its position on the elections in Ethiopia and the recent political violence in Ethiopia. We've made it clear in a number of ways: First and foremost, by statements issued by the EU missions and our Embassy in Addis Ababa on November the 6th. Second, by a statement issued by the State Department, I believe it was November the 8th. Third, in meetings with Ethiopian officials in Addis Ababa and opposition leaders as well in Addis Ababa and through conversations with our senior officials here in Washington and the capital there, and we've made clear where we stand on the issue in a number of ways -- as follows: Number one, violence should stop and no party to this issue should take acts that lead to the destruction of life and property. That's wrong and that's to be avoided. Second, that the government should take steps to either release or charge those in detention and they should do so expeditiously. And in the case where people are charged, that due process, transparency, and international standards be respected. Specifically, that those detained and those accused be provided defense counsel, access to international -- representatives of the international organizations and international human rights groups, relatives, and loved ones; that a commission of inquiry into the violence be established. And, as you point out in your question, that the rights of the media be respected in Ethiopia and that private media facilities be reopened so that the people can know what's going on. So we have made those points, I think, clearly and consistently to both the government and the opposition and we will continue to work to assure that people's freedoms are respected and that peace and an absence of violence prevail.
World Bank will cut aid to Ethiopia: (EiTB) WB, Ethiopia's largest donor, is pressing Ethiopian leaders to resolve the political crisis as soon as possible. The World Bank, Ethiopia's largest donor, will cut aid to this Horn of Africa nation after the political unrest that claimed the lives of at least 46 people early this month, said Ishac Diwan, the organization's country director. The World Bank pressed Ethiopian leaders to quickly resolve the political crisis triggered by disputed May legislative elections, warning that the growing economic problems in the country could escalate political instability. Ethiopia will lose international aid because of concerns about how the country is being governed, a World Bank official said on Wednesday, calling on leaders to quickly resolve a crisis triggered by a violent election dispute. "Aid will be cut. The question is by how much?" Isaac Diwan, World Bank country director in Ethiopia, said in an interview. "We have sent very clear signals that international and World Bank assistance will be cut over time if the governance situation does not improve," Diwan said. The World Bank provides $450-million of the $1.2-billion development assistance that Ethiopia receives from donors. Full Text

Nov 16: News Headlines
Congresman bill to enhance human rights, democracy & economic freedom
Chris Smith and Senator Biden on the worsening situation in Ethiopia/A>
A prof. at W.Michigan Univ. brings awarness on election fraud in Ethiopia
Ethiopia frees detainees, diplomats believe thousands are left
Electoral Strife Puts Focus Back on Ethiopia
The Internet - Why it isn't a panacea for poor countries

Summary Update: War as a Diversion: (Strategy Page) November 16, 2005: Ethiopia has "hardened" the town of Zalambessa (near the Eritrean border). The city's most powerful resident, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, has been deemed one of Africa's new generation of leaders, a rebel turned democrat and darling of the international donors. But after a months-long political standoff that has turned increasingly bloody, Ethiopia's capital has joined Africa's more ignominious places, becoming the latest continental crisis point to attract the attention of the African Union, which has its headquarters here. Mr. Meles now finds himself criticized as a dictator, not a democrat. "If the situation deteriorates here, it's a major symbolic failure for the African Union," said Abdul Mohammed, an analyst with the Inter-African Group who huddled with African Union leaders on Nov. 4 to discuss the Ethiopia crisis. "This is the home of the A.U. This is occurring in the A.U.'s backyard." Quite literally. The African Union's crisis management team did not have to consult a map to find the latest hot spot on this continent. It could look out the window.
