Opinion Jan 12: PREEMPTION IS A FALSE RIGHT
by HG, Jan 2007 - Mr. Zenawi used preemption as his right to invade Somalia in December 2006. Details and a sequence of events concerning the invasion are given elsewhere. Since coming to power in 1991 Zenawi has behaved in ways that cannot be expected from a rational individual with a discernible plan for the future other than destroying Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Civil Rights leader Professor Mesfin Woldemariam in his book, “Yekiulkulet Khedet”, examined issues when the social contract is broken and likened the condition as a trip to the abyss. He argued that "khedet" (denial of a social contract) is not only a mistake; and though “khedet” is linked to ignorance and stupidity, it is not only the sum of the two; “khedet” is going outside of the light

PRESS RELEASE: Ethio-Somalia Friendship Committee
Ethiopians and Somalians Join in Urgent Call
for Peace and Change: Jan 4, 2006.
There was an acknowledgement that the current war being waged by Ethiopia in Somalia
was largely unsupported by the people of Ethiopia. Instead it was seen as Prime Minister Meles
Zenawi’s war for his own political survival and one that returned the transitional government to
power although the people of Ethiopia or Somalia had chosen neither. It is hoped that a
government, that truly represents the people, will be promoted and established.

Opinion Jan 7: Fanning the Flames of Religious Conflict
The Other Side -
Given the current lack of legitimate moral and political authority, combined with the simmering anger of the oppressed millions, the escalating tension in Ethiopia cannot be dismissed. Whether the war has officially ended or not is longer the issue; rather, we must immediately get concerned how to avert the eruption of wide-scale religious conflict here. This naturally raises a most important question: Who here is suited for such a task?
Certainly not the current national leaders of either the Orthodox Church or the Islamic Court, who long ago publicly swapped allegiance from the moral to the political.
Certainly not the international community, who has eagerly embraced Ethiopia as the newest gladiator in the global anti-terrorist arena and ignorantly applauded her latest efforts at “regional stabilization”.
Most certainly NOT the dictatorial federal government, as has been repeatedly evidenced by their disgusting political corruption and horrific internal abuses.

Andenet Commentary:
It is relatively easy to identify the fundamental action needed to bring a lasting solution to this crisis which is to remove the current authorities/key players and EMPOWER the Ethiopian and Somali People respecting their choice. The key players include the slick pretender, the puppet and the hardliner which implies Meles, Gedi (TFG) and the ICU. However, it is very difficult is to achieve this Goal and this is where the assistance of the UN, US, EU, AU and the international community is needed critically.
Opinion Jan 6: Somalia's 'Government' Still on the Brink
by Jim Lobe AntiWar.com -
While U.S. officials were euphoric over last month's unexpectedly easy rout by Ethiopia and Somalia's Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of the Islamic Courts Union, skepticism that stability can be restored to the long-suffering African nation remains high.
In recent days, Washington has shown greater understanding for the Europeans' emphasis on a political settlement, "We're likely to see a slight shift in policy toward more emphasis on dialogue and the importance of bringing moderate elements into the fold, even as Washington steps up pressure on Uganda and other African countries to come up with troops."

Opinion Jan 4: Invading Somalia is no recipe for stability
Financial Times -
This invasion is not the answer to Somalia’s problems. Whatever the intentions of Addis Ababa and the increasingly assertive government of Meles Zenawi, the Ethiopian leader, his country is too poor and, with very long borders, too porous to stay in Somalia.

Opinion Jan 3/4: Poof! The Magic Jihadist!
Alemayehu G. Mariam
First and foremost, all foreign troops must go, immediately withdraw from Somalia. That includes Ethiopian troops, Eritrean troops, if any, the motley crew of mujahadeen fighters, if any. The African Union, Other countries and international organizations have called for the “the withdrawal of all troops and foreign elements from Somalia.”
Second, diplomacy must be given priority over any military solution. Third, U.N. Security Council Resolution should be vigorously implemented and monitored so that “all Member States, in particular those in the region,…refrain from any action in contravention of the arms embargo and related measures

Hizbawi Imbita (HI)
By HG, December 30, 2006 Opposition parties based in the Diaspora, but who are not of Kinijit ought to understand that the electorate had spoken. If they are democrats all should respect the victory of the electorate. The first order of Hizbawi Imbita requires that those in the Diaspora ought to refuse to accept any grouping of Kinijit other than through Shaleqa Yoseph, who has the ewqinna from the Kinijit chairperson. Failure to do that ensures division and weakness. Diaspora Ethiopians who do not accept leadership of the elected person, and the ewqinna given by him to the Shaleqa do not have the basis to talk about or project Hizbawi Imbita in Ethiopia, or any other claim for a non-violent struggle charted by Kinijit Ethiopia.

Opinion Dec 28: Analyst Doubts Ethiopian Troops Will Hold Mogadishu
view of Dr. Ken Menkhaus, assoc. prof of political science
In my humble opinion, IUCs leadership has What does he expect to happen next? Menkhaus says, “I think the next step is going to be the most difficult. The TFG is going to have to work in conjunction with some local allies to regain control of Mogadishu. If Mogadishu explodes into criminal violence and looting again, that is going to look very, very bad in the eyes of Somalis. Ethiopia is now going to have to step aside, I presume, and let mediators to bring together the TFG and the Islamists and re-emerging clan authorities in Mogadishu to broker a government of national unity. That remains the best-case scenario. That remains the long-term hope for Somalia.”
And the worst-case scenario? “The worst case is that this is a trap.

The Ethiopia-Somalia Conflict Key Points By David Shinn, former US Ambassador. to Ethiopia From my perspective, and I believe from the standpoint of the best interests of the US, all foreign forces should leave Somalia—Ethiopian troops, Eritrean troops, and non-Somali jihadis. Opinion Dec 27: IUC failed but Ethiopia and TFG are now on the spot light
by Abdi Jama
In my humble opinion, IUCs leadership has failed to seize the opportunity of becoming a uniting and stabilizing force in Somalia for the many reasons mentioned above. However, the courts can still make the strategic decision of stopping this unwinnable war and try to pursue their political objectives through dialogue and comprise. By doing so, the courts will save the lives of thousands of our educated youth who are being slaughtered in this war

Ethiopia's Invasion Seen Worsening Somali Chaos, The world from Berlin

Opinion: Zenawi’s hubris, risks & high stakes in the Somalia’s war
by By Apee Ojulu - Garowe The other notable external support for both TSFG and TPLF has been from the United States and Britain. The Bush Administration and the Blair government have extended their support to both Zenawi and Yusuf as a way to induce their governments and use, especially Ethiopia, the large military forces against their chief enemy, al-Qaeda. As a former U.S. Department Official, John Pendergast says” We are now giving a yellow-slash-green light to Ethiopia’s policy of containment by intervention The two countries have accused leaders of the UIC of supporting al-Qeada. But no evident has been provided to sustain their accusations.
EU Commissioner Louis Michel not impressed by rumors from Ethiopia - Urael BlogLouis Michel has told Legesse ‘ the name thief ’ Zenawi, Crime Minister, during a visit to Ethiopia that his record of human rights is awful, and that without improvement, relations will stay cool and tense. He repeated that the political prisoners should be released.
And now he went to Somalia to probably tell the antagonizing parties that he does not believe a word about the rumors that the tyrant neighbor is spreading. That a Somali solution is possible and that in a later stage he will deal with the Ethiopian war monger.
A War of Miscalculation - Solmalian Opinion Yes the Ethiopian may take the land but who will hold it for him? Surely not the dogs of war he brings along with him (the likes of Mohamed Dheere and Cabdi the Crazy). These filthy, morally bankrupt criminals have no credibility with Somali people anywhere. They have been rejected by the public long ago. They have no place in Somali society except as defendants in the court of justice for their crimes against humanity. Their presence as running dogs of Ethiopian occupation will only succeed to inflame the wrath of the people and enrich the ranks of the UIC insurgency that is being born and carefully delivered as we speak.

Opinion: Bush, in Somalia, Ignores Public Opposition to War - 12/25/06
by Bob Naiman and Patrick McElwee The Washington Post reported this week, the administration has given a "green light" for Ethiopia to send troops into Somalia to make war with the Islamic Courts Union (ICU).
The Post reports a widespread view in Ethiopia's capital that Meles is using the conflict in Somalia to distract people from internal problems and to justify further repression of opposition groups. Ethiopian opponents of war say Meles is playing up the claim that there are al-Qaeda operatives within the ICU to maintain support of the US, which relies on a steady flow of Ethiopian intelligence some regional analysts say is of dubious value.
Trevino: War in the Horn - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi avers that his nation has been "forced to enter a war," and though this is true to some extent -- the mere existence of a neighboring Islamist state is casus bellum in a sane world, and the Somali Islamists declared jihad months ago -- it is not, as he wishes to convey, a recent development.
Edmund Sanders LA Times: Ethiopian offensive in Somalia could mirror Iraq war
- Ethiopia's attacks against Islamic forces in Somalia may have delivered a short-term military victory, but analysts warned that a longer offensive could present the U.S. ally with some of the same challenges facing American forces in Iraq.

Opinion: Ethiopia is the play ball of mafia and CIA propaganda - 12/25/06
URAEL Blog
- “Jendayi Frazer, assistant secretary for Africa, said Somalia's Council of Islamic Courts is controlled by al-Qaeda, The Washington Post reported last Monday.
That creates a Taliban-like situation in a country apparently prepared to go to war with neighboring, predominantly Christian Ethiopia over a border dispute, the report said.”
Just some lines from an anonymous news bulletin. It shows that Legesse
‘ the name thief ’ Zenawi, Crime Minister of Ethiopia, is mimicked perfectly together with phony CIA information. I keep repeating it that Ethiopia is not predominantly Christian. I suppose Kenya is more Christian than Ethiopia and some mad mullahs have also been appointed in the north of Kenya, but nobody is talking about that. Djibouti is almost completely Islamic and is also part of the greater Somalia, it even accommodates French and American troops, but you do not hear a word about it.

Ethiopia: Washington Update - 12/23/06
by Mesfin Mekonen
The political climate in Washington is very receptive, but more work is
needed to get Congress to back Ethiopian freedom and democracy. It is essential that we work together as Ethiopians and Americans to remind our elected officials of the well documented repression in Ethiopia, especially to describe the plight of men and women who are unjustly imprisoned in appalling conditions, and to impress on them how urgent it is for the U.S. to act.
As to the situation in Somalia, it is focusing attention towards Ethiopia.
Some of the most influential foreign policy experts in Washington are warning the State Department against applying policies that have failed in other regions to the Horn
of Africa. Around the world, the U.S. has found that despots make poor
allies. American support for anti-Islamic warlords in Somalia has failed
spectacularly.

Opinion: U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa may aid al-Qaida, experts warn
Mercury News by Jonathan S. Landay and Shashank Bengali
NAIROBI, Kenya - As fighting intensified Friday between Somali Islamists and an Ethiopian intervention force, Western diplomats and experts warned that U.S. policy in the Horn of Africa - intended to curb Islamic radicalism - may not only be fueling this newest conflict, but also may be making it easier for al-Qaida to gain a foothold in the strategic region.
Washington’s Self-Defeating Somalia Policy, Garawonline by Matt Brydon - The most enduring outcome of Washington’s new Somalia policy is likely to be blowback: the United States and its regional allies will be managing the consequences of this error for years to come.
Why the United States Should Recognize Somaliland’s Independence - CSIS Africa Policy Forum by Peter Schraeder - Such an argument may seem counterintuitive at a time when tensions are rising in the region. But I submit that it is precisely because of those rising tensions that it is time for the Bush administration to act, especially if it is truly serious about democracy promotion, counter-terrorism, and curtailing the spread of Islamic fundamentalism.

Prospect of war with Somalia raises fears, questions in Ethiopia
There are questions the war rhetoric is meant to win Western backing for Meles. Some Ethiopians accuse the United States in particular of ignoring Meles's poor human rights record because it sees him as an ally in the war on terror. U.S. troops attached to an anti-terror operation based in nearby Djibouti can be seen from time to time in the Ethiopian capital, fueling rumors.

TSG officials said more than 600 Islamic fighters killed Islamic militia said they had killed around 400 Ethiopians and government fighters.
EiTb - Islamic forces who have declared they want to bring the whole country under Quranic rule vowed to continue attacks to drive troops from neighbouring Ethiopia, a largely Christian nation that is providing military support, out of Somalia.
Government officials said more than 600 Islamic fighters had been killed during four days of clashes.
Islamic militia said they had killed around 400 Ethiopians and government fighters. Neither claim could be independently confirmed.
By Steve Bloomfield, Africa Correspondent, IR Times -The US assistant secretary of state, Jendayi Frazer, asserted last week that the Courts are now "controlled by al-Qa'ida cell individuals". Ms Frazer claimed: "The top layer of the Court are extremists. They are terrorists." But that is not a view shared by the majority of diplomats based in the region. It is understood very few US diplomats with knowledge of the Horn of Africa share Ms Frazer's assessment.
Matt Brydon, an independent Horn of Africa analyst who has travelled extensively throughout Somalia, said Ms Frazer's comments were a "gross exaggeration" that were unlikely to be backed by intelligence reports. He said the US has "elevated an obscure regional problem into a global issue and potentially attracted a broad range of anti-American and anti-Western interests to the side of the Courts".

Unwarranted Accusation of Kinijit and its Leadership
KNA PR Office 16 December (KNA-PR) - The arrival of our patent in November 2006 and its subsequent announcement further strengthened our organization’s position and legality while entitling us the option to take actions against renegade groupies. Further, let be known that this issue of transferring the registration of the trade mark and its patent name to our organization has never been secret as implied by our accusers but rather a matter of public knowledge. For the record, Engineer Mogus Brook, has no interest to register the organization in his name and keep it that way. Sadly, such unqualified statements are statements fermented, baked and served by those whose ill conceived ideas are meant to divide and weaken our organization, its support groups and leadership - something our enemies will never succeed in accomplishing.
Ethiopian Review’s print and claim therefore, is nothing but another of its lopsided and far from the truth reporting based on its deliberate attempt to take a jab at a good name of a good man who is serving our organization and the principles it stands for whole heartedly.

In response to the Interview With Meles Zenawi
A ferenji resident shares views on Ethiopian political and social issues, 12/20/06 - I can barely even address his final comments—I am already spitting mad!!(…again) If there is “no such fear’”here, why are students being shot in the streets and
increasingly rounded up and forced into military service or imprisoned ‘just in case’? Why do national bloggers receive death threats on a daily basis for merely reporting events that would otherwise be covered by a free and independent media body? Why were thousands of soldiers brought in to surround Meskel square during the celebrations, if it was not exactly to inspire such fear and trembling? Why does everyone now fall unnaturally silent when the opposition song is played in bars and street cafes? Why have the fingers and arms of children been broken in punishment for a simple hand gesture that has now become illegal? Tell me why, in this country, are the prisons overflowing and the cupboards bare?

U.S. Policy Toward Ethiopia and Eritrea
By Terrence Lyons CSR NO. 21, DECEMBER 2006
COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS ,
After fifteen years in power, the EPRDF is in decline. The 2005 elections
demonstrated high levels of opposition, but failed to usher in an orderly transition based
on peaceful multiparty competition. The arrest of leading opposition politicians and civil
society leaders has immobilized political developments and silenced political speech for
the moment and leaves the regime fragile. Washington should develop new strategies to
manage the potentially violent transition if efforts to promote nonviolent change fail.

calculated effort to stamp out all political opposition and dissent in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian government slammed for actions since 2005 elections, Unconditional release demanded for all political prisoners, EU invitation to Ethiopian prime minister criticised, Called for publication of report on killing of 193 people
In its resolution on Ethiopia, Parliament looks at the crisis following the 2005 elections and the serious human rights violations that have taken place in the country since then, including the reports of continuing arrests, harassment, arbitrary detention and intimidation of opposition politicians, civil society activists, students and others.
According to the resolution, "111 opposition party leaders, journalists and human rights defenders are still in custody and are facing trial on charges including 'outrage against the Constitution', 'inciting, organising or leading armed rebellion' and 'attempted genocide'". A number of "post-election political detainees" are listed by name.
Against this background, MEPs call on the Ethiopian Government "to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners, whether journalists, trade union activists, human rights defenders or ordinary citizens, and to fulfill its obligations with respect to human rights, democratic principles and the rule of law".
The resolution also refers to the Ethiopian government-backed Commission of Inquiry set up in November 2005 to investigate the killing of 193 citizens following demonstrations in June and November 2005.
Furthermore, in a strong message from MEPs to a fellow EU institution, the resolution "deeply regrets the EU Commission's invitation to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi to address the European Development
