Fascism in Ethiopia: Meles is Quick to Kill but Defiant to Negotiate The constitution is defective and needs radical revision. The parliament is Meles is unleashing fascist terror against the elected opposition leaders and the people of Ethiopia. The Ethiopian people and the world must unite to stop the madness of officially instigated criminal violence.

Another Call to President Bush by Former Ethiopian Ambassador- 11/2 "The US officials would do a great service to the triumph of democracy in Ethiopia if they clearly understand the tense situation in the country. Telling the opposition to join parliament entirely controlled by one man heading for his 20 years to power by the sword would be the equivalent of the triumph of tyranny over democracy", " the future of his 14 years old government remains uncertain". Part 1- The May 2005 Ethiopian Election was held without Restructuring that is Indispensable for a Free and Fair Election Process, and without Preparing the Ground for Political and Leadership Change - 10/29 Like many concerned Ethiopians, I have been following the developments facing the people of Ethiopia today silently and with a degree of detachment, but with keen interest and a deep feeling of involvement. I have remained silent because of my views and convictions regarding a situation in which political parties participate in an election without preparing the ground for a free and fair election...

Haile beyond his running scene - 10/28 I hope readers will forgive me for bringing this issue in the circumstance where the political turmoil in our country is appearing as a fore front agenda. The point is the topic will lose its flavour utmost if it waits three weeks...Haile beyond his running scene is playing a big role in redressing the sadly distorted name of the country. So far he has lent his name and exerted a relentless effort to the Great Ethiopian Run to respond to this challenge and other related causes of annoyances. By Gashaw Zergaw, UK

Defective Constitution, Rigged Parliament, Sabotaged Negotiation, Illegal Government: No alternative to pursuing the Popular Peaceful-Democratic Struggle! - 10/20 The constitution is defective and needs radical revision. The parliament is rigged. A rigged parliament elects an illegal government. Those who congratulate this illegality such as Mr. Blair are becoming thorns on the peoples' genuine ambition to achieve democratic transition. Network of Ethio Scholars

An Open Letter To Dr. Mererra Gudina and Dr. Beyene Petros to Reconsider staying out of Parliament and Supporting the 8 Point Platform as Conditions for Reentry. Gentlemen, we recognize that the strategies adopted by your parties might be different from those pursued by the UEDF coalition to which both of you served as Chair and Vice Chair. We also remind you of the eight-point demand presented by Kinijit to Prime Minister Meles, as a strategy of opening doors for democratic process in FDRE. Though, the demand of the "Respect the Vote" movement is to see a revote in the 299 constituency regions that were unjustly appropriated to the EPRDF, we find that the Ethiopian interest is furthered when the Kinijit and UEDF parties, despite your having determined to enter parliament, at the very least, work together to get the eight-point demands enunciated by Kinijit accepted.

Gentlemen, our experience of previous party efforts has indicated that zealous followers become disaffected when the parties do not deliver their promises. The opposition ought to learn to focus on the overarching concern of Ethiopians and the interests of Ethiopia. At all costs the idea of "my partyism" must be subordinated to the interest of Ethiopia. We recognize that some supporters of UEDF are not pleased with the actions taken by the Chairman and Vice Chairman.

What To Do Next ! The Ethiopian people, with the help of OUR HEAVENLY FATHER have stood up and said enough is enough! The Woyanes know that, and that is why they wished the CUDP Central Committee to be divided. Everybody knows that the Woyane parliament works according to the plans and decisions of the TPLF.The Woyanes could let you say what you want, but that is how far it goes, and nothing more! It is time to let the International Community know Our One Accord in saying "NO!" to a regime which is rejected by the entire Ethiopian people! We call upon all of the Central Committee members of CUDP, to forge their unity in these difficult times and remain the pride of the Ethiopian electorate which has bestowed upon them trust! It is a trust bestowed upon you by our brave people who are still paying heavy prices to defend their electoral victories! Many like Shibre shall not have died in vain! The people voted Kinijit because they believed Kinijit belongs to them. Kinijit is their voice and their road to political victory! Commentry

Source kinijit.org: A Call from Democratic Countries to Surrender one’s Democratic Right - Oct 8 image of justice The West knew very well that the TPLF has denied local organizations the right to field native observers. They knew very well that the Election Board members were TPLF loyalists. They knew very well through Mr. Herman Cohen, the former Under Secretary for African Affairs, who recently stated in an interview with a reporter of the Voice of America, that the TPLF would never give up power accepting defeat at the polls. How Freedom is Won: From Civic Resistance to Durable Democracy
This Freedom House study analyzes 67 transitions from authoritarian rule that have occurred since 1972, the beginning of what political scientists call the "Third Wave" of democratization. The study examines four key characteristics of each transition -- the societal forces driving it, the strength of nonviolent civic resistance, the level of violence, and the sources of that violence -- to determine how successful transitions to democracy are achieved. In large measure, the study finds that transitions generated by nonviolent civic coalitions lead to far better results for freedom than top-down transitions initiated by elites. The findings suggest that policy makers should offer support to nascent civic resistance movements in order to foster democratic change.

The Dark Side of Ethiopia’s “Green Revolution”
On September 3, Norwegian fertilizer giant Yara International awarded its first-ever African Green Revolution Prize to Ethiopia’s prime minister, Meles Zenawi. To the amazement of many Ethiopians, Yara had identified Meles as being at the vanguard of what it calls “a revolution to end hunger that also empowers people with a voice, and the opportunity to create their own future.” But this is a disturbingly naïve statement. Indeed, Prime Minister Meles has poured more resources into agricultural development than most African leaders. But as Human Rights Watch has found, the prime minister’s government exploits its control over fertilizer and other vital agricultural inputs to keep the country’s huge rural population under tight political control. Human Rights Watch

Who owns parliament in Ethiopia? - 10/11
As the ‘new’ parliament held its inaugural sessions, the question of legitimacy, as always, has continued to haunt its members as well as its supreme leader, Meles Zenawi, who was ‘re-elected’ as Prime Minister. The re-election of Meles clearly shows that the parliament is nothing more than a pawn in the game of political legitimacy.

ETHIOPIAN SUNDAY RALLY BLOCKS LONDON ROADS! - 10/02
It was like no one was left at home in London again, but this time much bigger crowed turned up to demonstrate than ever. If Prime Minister Tony Blair has ears to listen, Sunday Ethiopian demonstrators should prove to him that Meles, his chosen ex-Commissioner for Africa is nothing but an ordinary criminal in the eyes of the majority of Ethiopians. It was difficult to express in words the Sunday rally of Ethiopians in London but let's try to catch an overview of the event. London Demo

Prof. Mesfin Open Letter to PM Meles Zenawi Amharic

No Option Left: Civil Disobedience is Right! - 10/02 No one can force you to accept theft and intimidation. We say the people have a right to disobey peacefully an unjust demand from the regime. They are right to emerge as a community of resistance and make the call: “Do not force us to accept theft.” The opposition is right to listen to the heart beat and justifiable anger of the people and guide the struggle for the people to undertake civil disobedience. We find this strong bond between people and opposition appropriate, wise and timely. The regime rejected the just demand to undertake peaceful demonstration. The regime brought up a wholly unrelated conditionality that the oppositions accept regime demand to enter parliament. When the people and the opposition said there is no relation between the right to demonstrate and the regime demand to enter parliament, the regime chose to flatly refuse to give permission for the people and the opposition to exercise their legitimate, legal and moral right to peaceful demonstration, assembly and association.

Urgent Call to All Oppositions, the Security Forces, the People of Tigray and the rest of Ethiopia!!- 09/26 All efforts have been made to open dialogue with the regime. The regime shut its doors and its ears. The people are left with no recourse except to show through peaceful protest their displeasure with the power that refuses to listen and hear their grievances, and prefers to intimidate and threaten.

The Carter Center Report in Plain English- 09/21 The Carter Center Report is more damning than that of the EU-EOM observers. In fact, while upholding everything the EU-EOM said the Carter Center has additional damning indictments to make. In one case for example, the carter center raises that during the reelections, there were cases of no ID card and inedible ink finger checks on voters as required by the rules, making a mockery of PM Meles’s assertion that the reelection voting was done with unconventional high turnout and a vote in “vengeance”. THE HOTTEST PLACE IN HELL - 09/03 The ills that Ethiopia suffers do not come from the people, but from those perverse would be leaders and politicians that have sown evil and depravity in our national life and political governance. Editorial-By Imeru Zelleke

Comments on Part III - P.M. Meles’s Letter to the Editor 09/01
Proof by assertion without substantiation of facts, criminalization of individuals and agencies and hurling insults at them when they do not conform to his party’s line characterized Part I and II of the PM’s “two-legged essay”. I had given my comments on the previous ones. Please find sprinkled in the body of the PM’s essay my comments.

Ethiopia: Meles Zenawi may have broken world record - 08/31 Prime Minister Meles Zenawi may have set a world record for writing the longest ‘letter’ to the editor ever published in a modern newspaper. Commentry

Who is a liar? : Meles or EU-Election Observation Mission He (Meles) confirmed his full agreement with the EU-EOM observation on issues that he finds from their statement that he thinks supports his views of the election process, whilst he denounced as “big lie” and “garbage” the aspects of the report that contradict his views. Network of Ethio Scholars

Facts against Meles response to the EU-EOM preliminary statement The PM parses inseparable attributes. He then dismisses as irrelevant those aspects that he does not favor. That seems to be typical of his argument in his "essay". In conclusion, the PM ought to be thanked for exposing a section of his thinking. The PM must focus more on applying democratic process in Ethiopia and less on trying to teach the EU-EOM about democracy. A small effort at showing humility on his part may allow him to learn something about democracy. Commentary By HG

Letter to Ms. Aurelia E. Brazeal, the US Ambassador in Ethiopia
As you are undoubtedly aware, in the wake of his devastating defeat in Addis, he has changed the rules to make the city ungovernable for the incoming leaders. In anticipation that he would stay in power, he has passed new laws to make any minority opposition totally ineffective and irrelevant. Therefore, to encourage the Opposition to work within the system is to disregard the will of the Ethiopian people and to invite the Opposition to engage in a suicidal exercise.
